Welcome To John Gerard Wines

We are a UK mail order wine merchant specialising in the supply of mixed cases of wine from Western Australia. Western Australian wines are renowned and we bring them to you with pleasure. Wines can be mixed in multiples of six with six bottles now being the minimum order.

WA produces some 4% of Australia's wine yet it accounts for some 25% of the premium wine from the 'Lucky Country'. We aim to make more varieties of Western Australian wine available to you than you can readily find in the High Street. So you will probably recognise the names of Jack Mann, David Hohnen and Mike Peterkin. Our wines come from the following regions: Swan Valley, Peel, Geographe, Margaret River, Pemberton, Great Southern and Manjimup.

WA also has about 15% of Australia's winemakers so you can see one of the reasons for so much quality wine being made.

Our approach to tastings is described on the site but we have put up dozens of different WA wines for local tasting over the last year and this service will continue.

And because we like Irish Whiskey we stock a small range of whiskies. There is also a small range of wine-related items.

There is a feedback form for you to request Bin End notifications and newsletters, just click on the Contact Us tab above.

The Search facility is really useful. You can search for a winemaker eg Stella Bella or a grape type eg Shiraz or a region eg Margaret River, or see which wine has won a medal. But please note that the price will be shown exVAT and this will be corrected at check out.

STOP PRESS We now have a Facebook group, not a surprise but its name is Western Australian Wines, and we welcome all comments. We don't mind if you post information about WA wines not sold by us.

Houghton White Classic - RIP

Houghton White Classic is no longer available in the UK unless you can find it as a bin end. The 2008 vintage was the last one we could get hold of, so it is now one for the memory, sad to say. Having started life as Houghton White Burgundy it succumbed to the dreaded EU influence and was renamed HWB, although we all knew that it was Houghton White Burgundy. With the passing of Constellation the range of Houghton wines in the UK has diminished considerably. If you see them in a wine merchant then please let everyone know by publicising it on our Facebook page.

Alkoomi wines

Not only have we added Alkoomi to our list but also Pierro and Fire Gully. Alkoomi Wines have their winery in the Frankland River region, a cool climate as you will probably know. Dr Mike Peterkin's wines, he founded Pierro, are made in the Margaret River region as are the Fire Gully wines. Mike Peterkin's Chardonnays are often spoken of in the same breath as those from Leeuwin Estate.

Best Selling Items

[Bin 81] Ferngrove Cossack Riesling 2007

[Bin 81] Ferngrove Cossack Riesling 2007

£13.64

IWC Bronze Medal 2007.

The Cossack Orchid, illustrated on the front label by acclaimed botanical artist Philippa Nikulinsky, is unique to Western Australia and is found predominantly in the South-West region of the state. A tract of pristine old growth forest has been preserved on the Ferngrove vineyard to provide habitat for such unique native flora.

The limited release of Riesling showcases the enormous potential of this variety from the Frankland River region. The 2005 vintage displays classic cool climate varietal aromas of fresh lime and citrus supported by lifted floral characters. These varietal characters follow through to the palate and are balanced by mineral acidity and a fine, long finish. This too good to put in an express chicken recipe. ABV 13% (S).

[Bin 59] Houghton Jack Mann Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec 1999

[Bin 59] Houghton Jack Mann Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec 1999

£53.04

Winner of the IWC 2005 Australian red wine trophy. It displays intense aromas of black currant, plum, liquorice and prune on the nose, with underlying chocolate, mint, hints of tobacco and black truffle. Spicy notes of vanilla, cardamom and nutmeg resulting from French Oak barrel maturation are also evident. Spicy Cabernet Sauvignon characteristics dominate the finish with tobacco cassis and star anise. After ten vintages it also gains recognition in Langton’s 2005 Classification of Australian Wine. The 6-bottle case is beautifully presented in wood, but please call for availability.

[Bin 203] Palandri The Estates Sauvignon Blanc 2008

[Bin 203] Palandri The Estates Sauvignon Blanc 2008

This a delicious wine where the natural initial acidity has softened yet it presents an underlying aroma of green beans and Bramley apples.
